Reclaiming the Prophetic Voice, in response to the call of the Iraq Moratorium Campaign, invites all citizens and people of faith to participate in a Public Witness on Friday, September 21. We will mark this International Day of Peace by breaking the routines of commerce, entertainment, and business as usual to witness to the horrifying costs of war: human, economic, and moral.
Beginning at 10 a.m. we will count the costs of war with a month-by-month public reading of the names of the US service people killed and month-by-month accounting of the number of US wounded and the number of Iraqi civilians killed and wounded, as well as the number of Iraqi refugees. We will also document the economic disaster that this war represents in its waste, its graft, and its denial of resources to those in need within our own communities.
If we are against forgetting, if we reject the multiplying evasions of the government in wartime, if our elected representatives fail us, then we as citizens and people of faith must represent ourselves and work to repair the world by refusing to allow our false sense of security to be paid for by the terrorizing of others.
If you are interested in helping with the reading of names, contact: the Rev. Carolyn Patierno at firstname.lastname@example.org. For more information about the witness contact: John Humphries at 860-236-5175 or email@example.com.
